Chennai: Southern Railway has decided to upgrade 15 railway stations in Chennai division under the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme.
In December last year, the Ministry of Railways announced a new policy called the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme to modernize railway stations. Accordingly, a master plan will be prepared considering the number of passengers coming and going to the railway station and the need for facilities. Southern Railway has decided to upgrade 15 railway stations in Chennai sector under this project.

According to this, Southern Railway has decided to upgrade 15 railway stations including Guindy, Mambalam, Chennai Beach, Chennai Park, Perambur, Ambattur, Tiruvallur, Saint Thomas Mount, Guduvanchery, Chengalpattu, Arakkonam, Tiruthani, Kummidipoondi, Sulurpet, Jolarpet. According to this, funds ranging from Rs.5 crore to Rs.10 crore will be allocated for each railway station and the railway stations will be upgraded. The first phase of work on these railway stations will begin in April and will be completed next year.
Most importantly, shops and commercial establishments will be set up on the upper floors of railway stations considering the minimum essential facilities. Improvements and introduction of new facilities will replace existing facilities at railway stations. Also, facilities such as information boards, facilities for differently abled persons, passenger accommodation, platforms, rest rooms and officers inspection room will be established.
