Chennai: The Anti-Idol Smuggling Unit has found the presence of 4 idols stolen from Kumbakonam temple 60 years ago in England and America. The work to recover the idols has been intensified.
Soundararaja Perumal Temple is located in Sundaraperumal Kovil village near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. In 2020, Raja, who is the executive officer of this temple, lodged a complaint with the Chennai Idol Anti-Smuggling Division Police Department.

In it, it was said that between 1957 and 1967, some miscreants had stolen the Tirumangai Alwar statue in the Soundararaja Perumal temple and placed a fake statue in its place. During his investigation, it was revealed that 60 to 65 years ago, some mysterious persons had stolen the idol of Tirumangai Alwar and kept the fake idol to avoid the suspicion of the devotees. An image of the idol stolen from this temple was obtained by the Indo-French Institute in Puducherry and compared with the fake idol.

In this case, the stolen statue was found in the Ashmolean Museum in London. The museum bought the statue at auction in 1967 from statue collector JR Belmont for $850. Therefore, after showing the evidence that the statue of Tirumangai Alwar was stolen, the anti-statutory anti-smuggling unit of the police is involved in the operation to bring back the statue.

That is, when the idol of Tirumangai Alwar was stolen from the Soundararaja Perumal Temple, 3 other idols of Kalinganarthana Krishnan, Vishnu and Sridevi were stolen and it was found that fake idols were placed in their place.
Therefore, when the anti-statutory anti-trafficking police searched for those idols, it was revealed that Kalinganarthana Krishnan idol is in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Vishnu in the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas and Sridevi in the Hills Auction Center in Florida. Therefore, the police are taking serious steps to recover those idols.
