New Delhi: Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabri has hailed India as the reason for Sri Lanka’s recovery from a severe economic crisis.
India’s neighbor Sri Lanka experienced a severe economic crisis last year. Foreign exchange reserves decreased and there was shortage of food grains, petrol and diesel. There were power outages for several hours every day. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned due to popular unrest. In that situation, people in Sri Lanka were engaged in massive protests. They also captured the President’s House.

However, after various twists and turns, Ranil Wickramasinghe is currently the President of Sri Lanka and Dinesh Gunawardena is the Prime Minister. India extended a helping hand to Sri Lanka which was stuck in economic crisis. Adequate quantities of food grains, bed rolls, diesel and life-saving medicines were sent from India. Sri Lanka is gradually recovering with India’s help.
In this context, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri participated in a recent program held in Delhi. Then he told the reporters: In May and June last year, there was a severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Since then we have gradually recovered from the crisis and progressed. Now inflation is under control. Rupee is stable. In no part of the country are people flocking for food and fuel. The tourism industry is recovering. Sri Lanka is returning to normalcy. We expect IMF financing to be available by the end of this month. Then the situation will improve.

Rs.32 thousand crore aid: Sri Lanka’s recovery from economic crisis is due to India. India has helped us more than any other country. India has given us a loan of 3.9 billion dollars (Rs. 32 thousand crores). This was our livelihood. We are forever indebted to India.
