Madurai: When it rains in Madurai, people and motorists suffer a lot as Vaigai Karai Road gets flooded.
A four-lane highway was constructed on both sides of the Vaigai river running through the center of Madurai to reduce traffic congestion in Madurai city. The Corporation and the Highways Department have jointly constructed this road. In the city, the Corporation is constructing not only a four-lane road, but also a park, footpath, retaining wall, etc. for a distance of 3 km from Raja Mill area to Kuruvikaransalai at a cost of Rs.80 crore. For the remaining 9 km, the National Highways Department has constructed a four-lane road at a cost of Rs.300 crore. However, in the area constructed by the corporation, the road has been disconnected at many places. Motorists in those areas will have to come back to urban roads and go back to Vaigai Karai Road.

It is said that due to the ongoing problem of land acquisition, this road is not continuous and the Corporation is taking steps to construct the road in the vacant places. Therefore, the purpose for which this road was constructed is not fulfilled and the traffic jam continues in the city.
In this case, the four-lane highway on both sides of the Vaigai river has become stagnant in many places and drowned in rainwater in Madurai, and people and motorists cannot use this road.
Traffic police are blocking traffic on the Vaigai-Karai roads and diverting the vehicles to the city roads. Therefore, the entire traffic comes to a standstill during the rainy season on the already congested city roads. The Vaikairai road from Kuruvikaransalai area to the Annanagar-Theppakulam bridge leading to Viranur Ring Road gets waterlogged during monsoons. Similarly, the Vaigai Karai road leading down to Yanyakal Bridge near Government Meenakshi College is submerged in rainwater. So, when it rains in the area, the police stopped the traffic.
In places where the Vaigai Karai four-lane road has not been built, motorists and people are unable to use this road continuously, and in places where it has been built, traffic is blocked due to rain and floods during the rainy season. Residents of Madurai are expressing their displeasure on social networking sites like Facebook and WhatsApp against the municipal engineers who designed the Vaigai Karai road by taking pictures of the woes of the waterlogged Vaigai Karai roads.
