Chennai: “Unfair NEET examination should be canceled to prevent suicide of students” insists the People’s Justice Center. Also, the party has listed the steps to be taken by the government until NEET is scrapped.
In a statement issued today by the Makkal Neeti Maiyam Party, “The results of the NEET entrance examination for junior medical studies have been released. Out of 1.32 lakh people from Tamil Nadu appeared for the exam, only 67,787 passed. The pass rate has decreased from 57.44 percent in 2020 to 54.40 percent in 2021 and 51.30 percent this year. Apart from that, only 2 people from Tamil Nadu have been placed in the top 50 in the current year’s national ranking.

The Tamil Nadu government prides itself on being an educationally advanced state. However, Tamil Nadu’s pass rate for NEET is lower than the national average. While 56.28 percent have passed the exam at the national level, only 51.30 percent have passed in Tamil Nadu. States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan lead in the pass rate.
Lakshana Swetha, a student from Tirumullaivayal, Chennai, hanged herself due to NEET failure. People’s Justice Center expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the student. Similarly, Jayasuda, a student from Velanchery in Thiruvallur district, tried to commit suicide by drinking acid. It is saddening that the NEET suicides that started in Ariyalur Anitha have not ended.
The President is yet to give his assent to the NEET Exemption Act passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The central government also did not recognize this. The DMK government, which came to power with an election promise of exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET, is amused by the continued suicides.
It has become common knowledge that only those students who spend lakhs of rupees for training in private centers succeed in the NEET exam. It is not only the policy of the People’s Justice Center but also the wish of all the people that the unfair examination called NEET should be removed not only from Tamilnadu but also from India itself. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government should make the voice of opposition to the NEET examination stronger. The central government should also realize the justification in this and come forward to cancel the NEET exam across the country.
Meanwhile, as an interim solution, the Tamil Nadu government should run quality training centers with qualified teachers. Or, students should join private coaching centers and provide financial support.
A mother has poisoned her daughter’s 8th grade student who was competing with her in Karaikal. The reason for such actions is the failure of our education system which focuses only on marks. That is why the People’s Justice Center has been continuously demanding changes in the school curriculum to suit the current situation.
In particular, raising the standard of education in government schools is the imperative of the hour. This year, 17,000 government school students appeared for the NEET exam, 80 percent of them failed. Educationists insist that students of Tamil Nadu should start training early and get quality training.
Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government and other political parties should fight hard to cancel the NEET exam. Meanwhile, the People’s Justice Center insists that the Tamil Nadu government should take appropriate steps to ensure that the students of Tamil Nadu pass the NEET exam and get an opportunity to become a doctor.
