Inaugurating the conference, Chief Minister Stalin said, “There are a total of 22 universities in Tamil Nadu. Only two universities were established before independence. Chennai University was established in 1857. Annamalai University in Chidambaram was established in 1929.
During the period from 1947 to 1967, only one university was created. It is Madurai Kamaraj University. The other 19 universities were created after 1967 i.e. during the 50 years of Dravidian governments. This is a very important proof of how far Tamil Nadu has advanced in higher education.
Established in 1857, University of Madras is a model for starting universities in other states. And Tamil Nadu is a state with universities for individual specializations.
The Tamil Nadu government allocates 3000 crore rupees annually for these universities. Such balanced allocation of funds is the reason why universities perform so well. Everyone knows that Tamil Nadu is the state of excellence in higher education in India.
Among the top 100 educational institutions in India, 18 institutions are located in Tamil Nadu. 21 of the top 100 universities are in Tamil Nadu. 31 of the top 100 colleges are in Tamil Nadu. 10 of the top 100 research institutes are located in Tamil Nadu. 35 of the top 200 engineering colleges are in Tamil Nadu. 11 of the top 100 management institutes are in Tamil Nadu. 8 of the top 100 medical institutes are in Tamil Nadu.
We stand tall as the best state in education. The reason for all this is the seed planted for education during the Justice Party era. Education alone can be a great asset to a person. It has always been the Dravidian movement that provides such an educational asset,” he said.
