Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye, founder & CEO of Ami Colé
My beauty and wellness resolutions for 2022 are to be patient with myself. My life and body is going through such a beautiful transition and all I can do is embrace it and lean into it. I want to take the time I need to truly take care of myself and listen to my body’s varying needs. Sometimes that means a day of stillness, other days that means a speedy walk through the neighborhood. I am always running thinking there’s something else that needs to get done. But I realized that the work will never end and my health, wellbeing, and mental soundness is #1. So I’ve learned to go with the flow, leaning in when energy is abundant and resting when I am feeling burnt out or pushed to the edge. [In taking care of yourself], don’t underestimate the power of a Gua Sha. Being in front of a computer screen all day and, sometimes night, we don’t know how much we strain our face—yes, face. Our eyes are squinting, eyeballs are strained, jawlines tight, and neck stiffen. I have been using my gua sha with my water-based Klur Immersion Serum to relieve that stress and tension before sleep. I use an aromatic body oil like Keys Soul Body Oil or Caudalie’s Divine Oil to rub down my body and relax after the shower.
Neada Deters, founder of LESSE
The past couple of years has, finally, forced me to appreciate the art of doing nothing; of being completely alone with my thoughts, away from a screen and the distractions of life. I hope to make obscenely long and indulgent baths a more common practice. A good bath seems to solve almost any issue and is the ultimate decompressant, relaxant, and healer of body and mind. I always apply the LESSE Bioactive Mask before I step into the bath, and let it take effect while I’m submerged. I love to try new water infusions, but somehow always come back to the Santa Maria Novella Notte Bath Oil. All of my towels are now Baina, simply because their quality and absorbency is incredible. They also happen to be certified eco-friendly and beautifully designed.

My wellness resolution for next year is to actually schedule time, every week, to take care of myself. It can be a hot bath at home, a two-hour session of arvigo massage, or something as simple as cutting veggies for the week on Sunday afternoon. The key for me is to put it in my agenda to make sure it actually happens! I take 10 minutes first thing on Mondays to go through my calendar and confirm the week ahead is as balanced as possible in terms of family, work, social life and me-time. I also want to do more infrared saunas, it is such a great way to quickly detoxify and recover. I live near a Higher Dose location and every now and then I indulge in their Lymphatic Drainage treatment. I always bring our APTO’s Turmeric Mist to spray all over my face and chest after the sauna, when the pores are open and ready to absorb all the goodness. I’m also excited to start using Levels, an app that tracks your glucose levels and shows you how your body reacts to food and exercise.

My beauty/wellness resolution for 2022 is to be unbothered. I feel in the past two years I was so bothered. Bothered by the changing world, the stress that induced onto my sagging skin, the blemishes that erupted from excess cortisone production due to said bothered behavior. Hence, going into 2022, I’m proclaiming that I just don’t care to care too much. I want to be good to myself by being satisfied with my present condition, not being swayed by what the world may bring me or circumstances I cannot change. Being unbothered is a state of power and I want to understand that I am powerful on my own. Of course, I have to shout out the products that led me to feeling most human, Good Light products, which are vegan, cruelty-free, made in Korea, and skin-friendly. They are so great for hydration and moisture—and aesthetically pleasing, which makes me feel happier every time I see them on my sink. I also love gua sha tools and anything that has LED lights, and I’m a sucker for cryo tools as well to help with swelling and make my face feel something. Ultimately, I want all of my beauty tools to enhance what I already love about myself and to make me more resilient. I want to understand and know that I have always been enough and will be a stronger, more kind, more beautiful me, tomorrow.

In 2022, I want to drink lots of water! Starting the day with half a liter of water makes such a difference for energy-levels, skin health and overall wellness. When I was breastfeeding [my daughter] Alma, I experienced a thirst like never before. This inspired me to always carry a big water bottle with me and it had so many great effects on my overall health. For my water goal, the HydroFlask with an added straw-lid makes for easy intake without having to unscrew the entire lid each time I want to take a sip. Aside from water, I’m also excited to re-introduce more oils into my life. I recently began using oil in my hair after launching the Ceremonia Hair Oil Mist that’s so incredibly lightweight, yet effective, fueling my hair with nutrition and a protective shield against the cold. For 2022 I also want to use body oils more consistently for deeper hydration. I love the Chillhouse Daytime Body Oil, my everyday hack is to add a few spritzes to my body lotion as a booster.

My beauty resolution for 2022 is to prioritize sleep. I notice a major difference in my health and physical wellbeing when I get a solid seven to eight hours of rest. It’s our consistent, daily actions that add up to make a meaningful impact on our lives, so I’m excited to dive more into the universe of care around sleep in the way I have with my hair care rituals. To kick off my evening rituals and get ready for a good night of sleep, I love using a dual-bristle brush, like our The Brush No. 001. I’ll put my phone on the other side of the room and take a few minutes to brush my hair. I’ve also been enjoying a cup of Reishi mushroom tea every evening, about two hours before I go to sleep. I add one-fourth of a teaspoon of the powder in a cup with a spoonful of raw honey and let it seep for 10 minutes before enjoying. I find that it calms me down and I feel better overall and less inflamed when I wake up.

Over the last two years, while it’s been difficult for so many of us, some of my most pure moments of feeling seen and my most beautiful are those moments connecting with the powerful women I’m so lucky to call my own. 2021 was an incredible year for me professionally and with my commitment to mentoring young girls and fellow beauty founders. My experiences this past year inspired my commitment in 2022 to prioritizing time, virtually or in person, with the women I love so dearly. The joy, the laughs, the tears, sharing our favorite beauty secrets, and championing one another do wonders for my heart and soul. Two of my favorite Thirteen Lune brands that I’m so excited to carry into 2022 are my Dr. Nigma B Famous Vitamin B supplements, which naturally energize me without the giant jolt of caffeine. I also swear by the Switch2Pure Jade Mask! As someone who suffers from dark circles, puffiness and allergies, this mask helps to alleviate facial tension and is like a cooling blanket for your face. Bonus, I finally found a reset cleanse that I love in Kroma Wellness! It’s a cleanse that doesn’t feel like a cleanse. It’s delicious and so good for you at the same time! I also love to bring the broths and juice packs on the plane for healthy alternatives while traveling.

In 2022, I’m focusing on beauty and wellness as an energetic experience because when the juju is good, you radiate from the inside out—and that type of beauty is irresistible, magnetic and fun to be around! It’s also contagious. What makes me feel the most beautiful is when I’m grounded, my mind is clear and focused and I feel embodied and fully myself, dancing to my own beat. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks! I remind myself of this often. My all-time mind-body support is reishi mushroom, the immortality mushroom of calmness, longevity, strength and resilience. [ A few rituals I swear by] are by morning sadhana—breath, movement and meditation—because when I give myself this time, I can better show up for my loved ones and team; writing/journaling, which helps to declutter my mind and tap into my creative flow; breathwork with the Othership app for guided breathwork sessions because breathing really shifts my physiology and consciousness and is a great release; and cold showers because they make you glow and are so good for immunity, focus, concentration and circulation.

In 2022, I’m looking forward to getting back into more structured routines. I think routines of any sort are truly the secret to feeling well. They give you this sense of ease and purpose, and it’s especially nice to have those steps first thing when you wake up, or right before you go to bed. 2021 was all over the place for me. On top of endless pandemic-mode, I gave up my Brooklyn apartment and was living with family back home, which can totally disrupt any sense of routine! Now that I’ve moved into my own place again, I’m excited to revisit routines and keep only what serves me. I’m definitely on a bodycare kick right now, and I’ve been using Esker’s dry brush before showering and then layering on the Restorative Body Oil onto clean, damp skin. It’s made with really quality ingredients and smells divine. Also shameless plug for Golde’s Coconut Collagen Boost. Adding this to my smoothies or matcha makes the biggest difference in my skin and nails—my whole face looks plumper, and my nails grow in strong. Doesn’t hurt that it makes virtually everything taste like a vanilla marshmallow.

In the New Year, I want to sheet mask at least a few times a week and carve out 15 minutes each day just for me without devices. I’ve been a long-time avid sheet masker, but being a new mom, I’m falling in love with sheet masking all over again. It makes it so easy and delightful to have hydrated, radiant skin no matter how tired, stressed, or dull skin can get. My go-to is the Peach & Lily Original Glow Sheet Mask—it’s gentle, super hydrating, biodegradable, and can be used daily.. And I’ve found that even 15 minutes just for me is so rejuvenating when I spend so much of my day focused on others and running a business. I’m excited to intentionally carve out this time each day because it’s a small easy thing to do that makes a big difference in head space. For my little break each day, I love it best when it’s simple, but ritualistic. This is when I make fresh matcha tea, curl up by the window, and just reflect and hang out on my own without devices or any agenda. And my favorite way to make matcha is using my Cuzen Matcha Maker because every cup is consistent, fresh, and delicious.

My beauty resolution is to wear more makeup! Over the past two years, I got a little too used to having only skin care on my face. While I still love having bare skin and spending five minutes on makeup, my resolution is to wear more lipstick (in the day), lip liner, colored eyeliner and maybe even sparkles. Since I’m not patient or particularly skilled at doing my makeup, I love multi-purpose products that don’t need a lot of precision. I love a dramatically glossy lip and eye with the Gucci Éclat De Beauté Effet Lumière—it can be worn solo or put over other makeup. I also love monochromatic makeup and purposely using a little too much blush. I can do both with my favorite Milk Makeup sticks, and of course the Isla Priming Moisturizer for a dewy-looking skin-care base.

My beauty resolution for 2022 is to take a more holistic approach to looking and feeling my best, from skin care, to diet, exercise as well as sleep. What inspired this resolution was learning more about how our minds and bodies are so very complex and that in order to gain any lasting improvement, there really needs to be an integrated, multi-pronged approach. In skin care, beyond just looking to correct skin concerns, I will be focused more on protection and prevention by regularly wearing sunscreen, as well as antioxidant-rich treatments. My BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner not only treats my hyper-pigmentation as it evens out and smoothes my skin, but has powerful antioxidant benefits that protect my skin from future damage, while the BeautyStat Universal Microbiome Barrier Balancing Cleanser contains medical-grade silver along with vegan ceramides and pomegranate sterols that keep my skin cleansed of harmful environmental aggressors while keeping its microbiome and barrier protected. As I learn more and more about how our diet affects our skin, body and entire well-being, I will look to incorporate more organic, grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, as well as organic green vegetables, all of which are nutrient-dense without harmful additives. I will continue to regularly do resistance training combined with cardiovascular exercise as well as stretching to keep my body strong and nimble. I have learned that sleep is the only time when we can truly repair and restore so I will be look to get at least seven hours of sleep per night.

In 2022, I want to do 20 minutes of transcendental meditation every morning. It sounds so simple, but with two little kids it’s been really hard to make the time like I did before starting Saie. When I do it though, my mind and body are so appreciative. I sleep better, I make better decisions, and I feel good—which to me, is the ultimate beauty goal. Saie was born out of a desire to create change and with this ambitious goal comes a new kind of exciting stress. I’ve had many sleepless nights over the last year and I know that this is just the beginning of the journey. To be the best version of myself, inside and out, I know that investing time in my daily meditation practice is going to make all the difference. Additionally, my two-minute makeup routine is like its own mini meditation that I look forward to everyday. I always start with Slip Tint all over for the most beautiful dewy moisture and sun protection. I recently ordered a bottle of the Moon Juice SuperYou with adaptogens, which I heard is great! I also would like to get Necessaire’s Body Oil to do a relaxing body massage before bed with the Wildling Aura Stone.

As an AAPI entrepreneur, I have been inspired by my Japanese heritage and the philosophy of finding simplicity with purpose as we enter a new year. The pace of life has both slowed and sped up remarkably over the past year, thus my resolution is to maintain balance through simple, yet impactful practices in my beauty and self-care rituals. The past year has felt like a pendulum swinging in two directions and life now feels busier than ever, so for me it’s about finding balance and living with presence and intention. Joining a new decade of life this year has also sparked a redefining of values and deep reflection about my Ikigai (Japanese concept around purpose). As a busy artist and entrepreneur, my time with family and friends can be limited, so I’m making space for quality time with the people I love. In that same vein, I am also prioritizing my personal downtime and ensuring that I’m listening to and caring for both my body and mind. As part of focusing on impactful practices, the two essential products that simplify my beauty routine are Kimiko’s Super Fine Eyebrow Pencil Automatique because it quickly lifts my entire face and The Brow Sensei, which styles and sets brows while encouraging fuller-looking hair with its multiple peptides and plant extracts. While I’m continually testing new skin-care products and technologies, I intend to use Lightstim LED Light Therapy regularly as my skin booster. My treatment time doubles as a moment to unplug and meditate. Even if I only find five to 10 minutes to squeeze in, these small moments of downtime are restorative for both skin and mind.
