Tuticorin: As fire heat is raging in Tuticorin, the price of fresh water has reached its peak. A young water was sold at Rs.60 but the sales did not decrease.
This year’s heat has been more than usual in Tuticorin district. Especially on May 4, when Agni began to heat up, the heat started to intensify. For the past few days, the heat has reached its peak in Thoothukudi. Daytime temperatures are higher than normal. The heat is over 100 degrees and people are sweltering.

Due to the heat, people are unable to go out during the day and are paralyzed inside their houses. Due to the scorching heat, people are thronging the roadside refreshment stalls. Due to this, the sales of Ila Neer, Nungu, Pataneer, Tarpusani, Gamma pulp and soft drinks have increased. There is a strong demand among the people especially for fresh water.
As far as Thoothukudi is concerned, young water is sold from Pollachi. Till a week ago, a young water was being sold at the price of Rs.50 to Rs.55. But now the price of fresh water has increased to Rs.60. Traders say that despite the increase in price, the sale of fresh water has not decreased at all. In this regard, Muthu Mariappan, who is running a grocery store in Doovipuram area of Thoothukudi, said:

The price has increased due to the reduced flow of fresh water from Pollachi. There are 3 wholesale water dealers in Tuticorin. We buy from them and sell. We get a bottle of water for Rs.53. We sell it for Rs.60. Big fruit shop owners buy fresh water directly from Pollachi and sell it. They sell a fresh water for Rs.55.
Due to excess water flow from Pollachi to Andhra Pradesh, we have shortage in availability. At present, water comes only 2 days a week in 7 trucks each. Earlier, fresh water was delivered in trucks daily. During the same period last year, we sold a single water at Rs.40 to Rs.45. This year the impact of the sun is more and the fresh water supply is less. This is why the price has increased. The price is likely to rise further in the coming days.
Local fresh water from Bhavoorchatram and Valliyur areas of Tirunelveli district is sold at Rs.25 to Rs.30. But, it contains only 150 ml of water. But Pollachi fresh water contains 300 ml of water. Therefore, the people of Thoothukudi prefer Pollachi water. Due to this, none of the traders here sell local fresh water. They only sell Pollachi fresh water. He said that despite the high price, the sale of water has not decreased at all.
