After making its own chips, Apple plans to use its own custom display screens in mobile devices within the next year or two.
Apple wants to make its own displays by next year to end its dependence on partners such as Samsung and LG for the screens of its own devices, including mobiles and smartwatches. According to Bloomberg, Apple is likely to kick-start this move by using its own display on the most expensive Apple Watches by the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, LG may be hit hard by Apple’s decision. Because around 36% of LG Display’s total revenue is dependent on Apple. That leaves Samsung with a 6.6% share of Apple’s total display revenue. Apple’s own screens to be used in the devices will reportedly upgrade the current OLED (organic light-emitting diode) standard to a technology called microLED. Apple wants to bring microLED technology to its flagship iPhones as well.
Apple’s new project is being led by Wei Chen, who heads Apple’s display technology group in Johnny Srougee’s hardware technologies division, according to a statement. The company has reportedly started testing microLED displays in an update to its high-end sports watch, the Apple Watch Ultra.
And according to the report, it’s a major move that Apple has been planning for years. The initiative began with Apple’s acquisition of LuxVue, a startup that pioneered microLED technology. With this, Apple is slowly but surely moving away from using components made by other companies, the report said.

Apple hopes the move will allow it to better customize its devices and control its supply chain more effectively by making screens. Currently, Samsung and LG are providing displays for Apple Watches, but experts say this situation will definitely change by next year. Apple’s own screen project was initially led by Lynn Youngs, a senior executive in the company’s hardware engineering division. But that project was handed over to Johny Srouji, who oversees the company’s custom chip group, two years ago.
