Most of the users buying products on e-commerce platforms decide whether to buy or not based on the quality of the products and the star ratings of previous users. Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Department has announced new rules to prevent fake reviews & ratings on e-commerce websites. Fake reviews are written in an attempt to create a reputation for a particular brand of product or to harm the business of competing companies. These are usually posted by non-customers with specific intent.

Government guidelines on online consumer reviews came into force last week (November 25) to curb fake reviews posted on several e-commerce platforms including Amazon and Flipkart. These rules apply to websites that offer tour & travel services, restaurants and consumer goods to users.
