Google announced in January that it would cut 6% of its workforce to cut costs due to the post-coronavirus downturn. A mail was sent out that employees were being laid off overnight.

Some Google workers, especially those in the US, lost their jobs immediately. This process is much slower in European countries with strong labor protection legislation. For example, only certain employees who worked at a Google facility in Switzerland were laid off.

In this case, the employees of Google have put forward various demands in a letter written to Sundar Pichai. That includes temporarily halting hiring, giving priority to laid-off workers in job vacancies, and requiring voluntary layoffs before forced layoffs.

Not only that, there has also been a demand for parental leave for Google employees. It has also been requested to avoid the dismissal of employees from countries where there is war in Ukraine, fear of war, riots etc.

The letter noted that the implications of Alphabet’s decision to cut its workforce are global. “Nowhere are workers’ voices considered enough,” he wrote, “and we workers know that we are stronger together than we are alone.”
